First Film (1982)
This is the digitised remnant of my first attempt at putting images to music. It was the central piece to a three part Super 8mm work towards a degree (Diploma of Fine Art) at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1982.
Part 1 was a piece on surveillance. In the first scene a person is seen filming something. As the film progress, we see that the previous sequence is being filmed by the current one and so forth in this interweaving of gazes all the way to the final shot, the destination of which is the cinema itself where the film is being projected. A zoom then leads into First Film.
Part 2, First Film was an excuse to execute a music video. The piece Volo Vivace ( Tuxedomoon, 1980) was used as a counterpoint to short sequences from the films, The Curse of the Cat People (Robert Wise, 1944) & Histoire d'O (Just Jaeckin, 1975), creating a lyrical elegy on the subject of unsatiated desire.
Part 3 used edited dialogue from the TV soap opera, The Bold and the Beautiful (sadly lost now) played over a black screen and intercut with 2 actors playing out ambiguous scenes that paralleled the dialogue and could be interpreted as either romantic encounters or parting arguments.
